Scouts in Guyana contribute to observance of Earth Day 2010
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd every year in an international effort to raise awareness about issues such as pollution, biodiversity loss and climate change that have been affecting our planet. It encourages people around the world to learn more about our actions and how they affect our environment and most importantly to take positive actions (i.e. Acts of Green) towards protecting the Earth – Our Environment.
In April 17th, Scouts in Guyana participated in an Earth Day Forum where they learnt more about what threats the Earth has been faced with over the years and what positive actions could be taken to minimize these threats. Scouts were exposed to informal presentations and group discussions which were facilitated by members of ECO-1 which is a Non-Governmental Organisation working for environmental and social sustainability in Guyana, engaging in research and development for greener technologies, promoting awareness and sustainable lifestyles for Guyanese.
During the Forum, participants made individual commitment(s) towards living greener lifestyles. Each Scout represented their ‘act of green’ on a leaf which was then placed on their ‘Tree of Green Acts’.
A total of five (5) Scout Groups were represented at the Scouts-Guyana’s Earth Day Forum and each Scout committed to returning to their respective Groups to share what they learnt and help to plan and execute an act of green at their Scout Group level.
Scouts Guyana continues to promote a strong environmental programme for its youth membership and will soon be commencing preparations for the observance of World Environment Day and ‘Guyana’s Environment Week’ in June.
