Earth Hour Singapore 2010

Since 2007, the last Saturday of March is no longer just a Saturday. It has become a significant day. It is when people all over the world unite together for a common cause to help save our environment. It is Earth Hour.

The Singapore Scout Association first started observing Earth Hour in 2009 when Singapore officially pledged for Earth Hour. WWF Singapore then approached the NSO and invited us to be one of their supporting partners, right after the World Organisation of Scout Movement reinforced their long-term partnership with WWF for Earth Hour at the end of 2008 following the recommendations of Scouts at the 10th World Scout Youth Forum in Korea. Once again in 2010, The Singapore Scout Association became one of the supporting partners of WWF Singapore's Earth Hour Concert at Esplanade Park, Singapore, on 27th March 2010.

With a two-fold increase in the number of volunteers at 60 as compared to 30 in 2009, The Singapore Scout Association provided the main manpower in helping to run the Earth Hour Concert. With the valuable experience from last year, we were tasked again by WWF Singapore to coordinate the most important segment of the night – the 'Black-out' of the city's skyline. The team then coordinated it almost to perfection, which was deemed to be a greater success than in 2009 by WFF Singapore.

Apart from the volunteers, the concert saw almost 500 Scouts of all ages, up from only 200 in 2009, joining in the celebrations of Earth Hour. The event definitely saw a higher attendance than the year before, a good sign that it's reaching out to the people and more are aware of it. Although it's just a day in a year, but the educational effort is definitely gaining momentum with the new tagline – 'Earth Hour. Every Hour." It is a start, but eventually Earth Hour will no longer be just a day in a year, but a global practice that will occur in any way, any time and anywhere.
