Ghanaian Rovers commemorate Environment Day in style

ACCRA – On World Environment Day, 5 June 2009, twelve Rovers from various tertiary institutions in Ghana took an initiative to celebrate World Environment Day in their own way. These Rovers financed and organised a service project by themselves after gaining permission from the National Headquarters.

This service project was held in Gomoa Fetteh, a community located in the Central Region of the country. The location was chosen for two reasons: it has virtually no contact with any youth organisation and Scouting has never introduced in the community.

The main aim of the service project was to educate the community on the correct ways of waste disposal. The target group was school children between the ages of 7 and 15 from three of the community schools.

The objectives of the project were to:-

  • Educate the pupils on the proper methods of disposing of everyday waste;
  • Teach them to recycle and reuse waste paper through a simple process called the papier maché;
  • Introduce Scouting to the community and eventually form a Scout group.

The Rovers then met with 130 pupils from the three schools. They discussed climate change and its effects on mankind. The pupils and Rovers then embarked on a clean-up exercise around the school park. Also, the pupils were taught how to distinguish between the various forms of everyday waste and how to properly dispose of them. The Rovers however mainly focused on teaching the pupils and teachers how to do papier maché, a creative and fun way to dispose of waste paper. This is a simple and cheap process whereby used paper is recycled and reused as decorations and teaching aids.
