Scouts of the World Award at the "Thirst for Life Scout Expo 2009", Swaziland

"The Thirst for Life" initiative by the Swaziland Scout Association is envisioned as a project that generates sufficient resources to sustain and reinvest in its growth, youth-oriented, reaching out to those in difficult circumstances, developing young people and addressing relevant social priorities.

Swaziland’s International Scout Camp, also known as "Thirst for Life Scout Expo 2009" was held in the "Thirst for Life" Scout Centre from 31st July to 11th August, 2009. The camp saw an attendance of over a hundred Scouts and Leaders from South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Germany, Singapore and a strong contingent from Hertfordshire, England.

The participants were introduced to the remarkable campsite located in the mountain range, and a whole range of activities and community projects. The programme included orphanage and school visits, Kruger National Park tour in South Africa, Mozambique tour, campsite development, construction of dormitories, and lots of interaction with the local community.

As part of the camp’s programme, the Singapore Scout Association was invited to assist in promoting the Scouts of the World Award (SWA). An introduction session was done and topics of discussions included what SWA is, how to implement and achieve it, and examples of SWA Voluntary Service projects done around the world amongst many others. The participants were also given a taste of how facilitation exercises in Discovery workshops are done, and with the visits to National Parks, orphanages and schools, they were exposed to the important exploration component of Discovery workshops.

The session eventually received positive feedbacks, and further discussions continued of possible involvement in SWA Discovery workshops and even collaborations for future SWA Voluntary Service projects. Indeed a ‘Thirst for Life’ experience for the participants of the camp!
