Amahoro Amani Special International Gathering

The Amahoro Amani International Gathering has been a historical event that will remain for a long time in the minds and in the hearts of the hundreds of participants. 550 young people came from Africa and Europe, and had the opportunity to share the experiences of the Community Mediators and celebrate together the Centenary of the Scout Movement. The participants from 11 countries (Burundi, Rwanda, DR Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Denmark, Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, and Finland) met one another on the hill of Bungere (which means 'the Shepard' in Kirundi, language of Burundi), at the hearth of Burundi… and of Africa!

The main objective: to evaluate, reinforce and take profit of the Community Mediators’ initiatives, sharing their results with all the participants. The organisation and the activities’ high level allowed these goals to be achieved.

The young people attended different workshops at the Global Development Village, listened and shared real experiences during the Market for Peace Practices, discovered the other countries and associations at the Crossroad of Cultures. On the 1st of August everyone gathered on the Nyabiraba hill to renew their promise.

Peace education was high on the agenda at the Gathering.

All the activities and the experiences lived in the last 2 years have strengthened the Community Mediators; they are now strong enough to engage themselves in going on with their action in favour of local communities, with the support of their national Scout and Guide Associations.

The International Gathering drew to a close on the 5th August after a week full of education and adventure. Well done to all involved for the International Gathering in the African Great Lakes region, it is a wonderful demonstration of the promotion of lasting peace!
