World Scouting's Commitment to Gender Equity
This special day is being marked by various events all over the world to celebrate the social, political and cultural achievements of girls and women. And although gender equality has progressed enormously over the past century, some countries and organisations still treat women unfairly, thus presenting the need for youth involvement to create a better world.
For the Scout Movement, this concern comes under the priority number 3 of the Strategy for Scouting "Girls and Boys, Women and Men" which ask for "respecting differences, promoting equality and sharing responsibility".
Very simple questions can help improve the Movement's behaviour:
- Does the Movement take the needs and aspirations of both girls and boys into account when designing the educational programmes?
- Are adult leaders able to carefully observe and analyse what is really happening in the field?
- Are they keen to improve their current practices to ensure that each individual girl and boy is given opportunities to develop him/herself fully?
