JOTI 2009 Theme: Climate Change Challenge "C3"
World Scouting's communication theme for this year is environment, given our work and the worldwide focus on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference (COP 15) in Copenhagen 7 - 18 December.
Therefore the “C3” is an excellent opportunity to show to the world the efforts of millions of Scouts to protect the environment and take positive action against climate change.
JOTI and JOTA are real testimonies to the international dimension of Scouting, where young people not only learn about new technologies, they can understand that there are millions of Scouts all over the world sharing the same vision: creating a better world!
You can chat about the Climate Change Challenge C3 in the JOTI chat room: #wosm-challenge
Educational activities for JOTI 2009
In 2008 the “World Scout Challenge – JOTI 2008” was proposed to participants of the JOTI, this educational activity was based on three working themes: Peace, Environment and Rovering.
The World Scout Challenge – JOTI 2008 used a three-staged process that allows participants to explore issues related with the working themes. Participants shared and compared their answers/findings with other Scouts overseas.
59 Countries took part in the “World Scout Challenge – JOTI 2008”. In total 408 groups participated:
- 152 groups chose the working theme “Peace”
- 32 groups chose the working theme “Rovering”
- 224 groups chose the working theme “Environment”
An average of 6 participants per group, this means 2448 Scouts took part on the Challenge 2008.
Based on this experience a new challenge has been developed for the JOTI and JOTA 2009:
In order to complete the Climate Change Challenge (“C3”) a JOTI participant should:
1) Register as a participant with “Race for the environment” at:
http://www.environmentrace.org/
2) Complete at least 10 challenges in total inside the “Race for the environment” under the themes of:
- Air & Water
- Habitats & Species
- Harmful Substances
- Environmental Practices
- Environmental Hazards & Natural Disasters
3) Fill out the registration form ( click here to enter the form)
You will be asked to report your “climate impact” obtained from the “Race for the Environment” activity, the number of challenges you were able to complete and also you will need to provide some additional information related to your actions against climate change.
4) Once we received your form and results we will send you an international certificate online.
Race for the Environment is a co-operation between the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM), Swedish Scouts & Guides, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Volvo Ocean Race (VOR). It aims to encourage young people to take action for the environment in their daily lives. The main idea is that small actions taken by many people have a big impact on the environment.
