ARO gets ''scouty'' in a Kenyan Rift Valley camp site!
In an unprecedented style, ARO staff organized a 2-day retreat in the beautiful Burch's Camp, in Kenya's Rift Valley Province between the 27th and 28th June 2007.
All ARO's Units participated in the bivouac-like camp that was conducted in compliance with the Scout Method. « The objective of the camp is to boost our team building efforts, by learning more about one another », said the Regional Director and Camp Chief, Rubina M. Haroon during her opening remarks. She also made mention of the fact that the event was a special way of welcoming the new Unit Manager, Indian Ocean, Elzette Balgobin, who also partook in the activity.
The fun-filled camp offered a wide range of activities. In an ambience of camaraderie, on day one, participants played soccer, had a barbecue and organized presentations and Scout games for the evening campfire. The camp was declared officially open in the afternoon of Wednesday 27th June by the Camp Chief, Rubina M. Haroon, who, at the same time welcomed participants to the event. Then followed an introduction session during which campers described themselves and projected the future of Scouting in the next century. Among the campers was a guest, Per Eriksson of the Swedish Guide and Scout Council (Also Programme Coordinator, IOGT-NTO Movement, International Institute). He commended the initiative and expressed his happiness to be part of the event.
The first day ended after a campfire. On Thursday morning, after the closing assembly, the party headed to the nearby Lake Naivasha for a boat-riding expedition across the lake. That marked the end of the camp, as participants were driven back to Nairobi thereafter. Participants felt that the event was very successful and thought that it was an experience they would not forget in a rush.
