19-year-old Scout makes it to the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro
On 13th February 2008, Cecilia Njoroge, a Rover Scout from Powellnet Rover Crew, Kajiado District, Kenya, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. She was one the 9 climbers who made it to the highest point, known as Uhuru Peak (5,685 metres), out of a team of 35 persons.
The event was organized and sponsored by Mr. Tim Challen, leader of the Kilimanjaro initiative. Asked to describe the experience, during an interview at the ARO/Communications Unit, Cecilia said, 'It was marvellous but also tough and adventurous'. She also noted in her diary 'It made me a better person'
Apart from the climbing, other activities included: an orientation conducted at the Outbound Kenya Centre; training on leadership skills, effective communication, compass reading, First Aid, among others. The lesson she learned from the event is that 'everything is possible when you have determination'.
