MoU with WHO

The impact of leprosy, when taking in account the social and medical aspects, cannot be underestimated. Recognising this, in 1991 World Health Assembly passed a resolution to eliminate leprosy as a public health problem by the year 2000.

In 1997, World Scouting and AHM Leprosy Relief Organisation decided to support the efforts of the WHO Action Programme for the Elimination of Leprosy by signing a Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement laid out the expectations and obligations of the three agencies in the fight against leprosy. As a result of this MoU, World Scouting worked to develop the capacity of its National Scout Organisations to carry out leprosy awareness, detection and treatment programmes with the support of the WHO and AHM. Specific countries were targeted; the selection criteria being a prevalence rate of leprosy of 4.7 per 10,000.
