German Scouts build library for Mongolia

A group of German Scouts initiated a project called “Book Bridge Mongolia” which aims to fill the lack of English textbooks that will significantly help young people of Mongolia in their educational development.

The project was developed after German Scouts from a troop in Neumarkt, a district in Bavaria, visited their sister troop in Arvaikher, Mongolia four years ago, where they noticed the lack of local library and English school books. That visit left a significant mark leading them to create an annual youth exchange program between the two countries.

The partnership has generated a voluminous collection of 12,000 English textbooks by Scouts in Neumarkt who tapped schools, libraries, publishers and private individuals for donations. This has been matched with a newly renovated and furnished library in Arvaikher.

After sorting, labeling and packing the books, a handover ceremony will be organized on 10th July 2009 where German Scouts will turn over the books to the Mongolian Ambassador. These will be transported to Mongolia in time for the library's inauguration on 1st September 2009 and the opening of a new school year. The books will be distributed to 26 schools throughout Mongolia.
