The First Jamboree of the Eurasia Region
The First Jamboree of the Eurasia Region has its own background: Jamboree Rules and Regulations has been approved by the Second Conference of the Eurasia Regional Scout Organization.
In April 2005, during the Second Meeting of the Regional Scout Committee in Moscow, Russia, the Armenian National Scout Organization “HASK” manifested its readiness to host the First Jamboree of the Eurasia Scout Region. In May 2006, Mr. Irakli Todua, Chairman of the Eurasia Regional Scout Committee, Mathieu Pouret, Unit Manager of the World Events from the World Scout Bureau, and Alexander Bondar, Director of the WSB - Eurasia Regional Office made a visit to Armenia to see the site of a future Jamboree. At the same time, talks were held and essential decisions were passed to make the work of a Jamboree steering committee most efficient. Despite the fact that the period for preparation was fairly short, the Steering Committee managed to prepare the site of the Jamboree and carried out a range of activities required for the support of persons participating in the Jamboree program, arranged for catering services, etc.
The First Jamboree of the Eurasia Region took place in the period from August 13 to 22, 2006, in Byurakan, Armenia. The Jamboree’s slogan was ”We are the future of Eurasia”.
Contingents from ten countries took part in the Jamboree: Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Ukraine and Tajikistan from the Eurasia Region, as well as from the U.S.A, Japan and the Netherlands. Regretfully, because of transportation difficulties, 15 scouts from Saudi Arabia were not able to arrive timely by the beginning of the Jamboree. Also transportation difficulties prevented the Russian Association of Scouts/Navigators to send its contingent in full and as result only 22 scouts arrived instead of 60. The same problem was faced by the Georgian Organization of the Scout Movement. As a consequence, 120 individuals participated in the Jamboree.
To organize the Jamboree, the Armenian National Scout Organization “HASK” established its Steering Committee composed of Camp Director Aram Frankyan, Camp Deputy Director Rouzan Tamparazyan, Program Manager Avetis Berberyan, and members Lilit Zakaryan, David Akobyan, Arout Nasoyan and Vagarshak Sargsyan.
The Jamboree’s program was manifold and fully in compliance with a model accepted by the WOSM for regional or world jamborees.
All activities run during the Jamboree were videotaped and broadcasted on the Armenian National TV. For this, we expressed our gratitude to Director of Information Center “Haylur” Arutun Arutyunyan, Armenian Public TV Station “C1”, and TV Station “Yerkir Media”.
The Jamboree was visited by Eduardo Missoni, Secretary General of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, who stayed at the Jamboree from August 18 to 22, 2006. In that period he held meetings and talks with scout contingents from all countries represented at the Jamboree. Eduardo Missoni also had meetings with Armenian officials – Minister for Culture and Youth Matters Asmik Pogosyan and Minister for Education and Science Levon Mkrtchyan.
During the Jamboree, a meeting of the Eurasia Regional Scout Committee was held, at which a number of important resolutions were passed.
On the whole, as it was admitted by participants and guests, the First Jamboree of the Eurasia Region was conducted at a fairly well-organized and meaningful level.
A decision on the place and time of the next Eurasia Regional Jamboree will be probably made at the Third Regional Scout Conference in September 2007. Certainly, a timely passing of the decision on the place and time of the Second Eurasia Regional Jamboree can improve the level of its preparation and broaden the composition of its participants.
A video was made to inform about Jamboree’s most significant events.
All Jamboree’s participants expressed words of gratitude to its organizers from the Armenian National Scout Organization “HASK”.
