Guinean President and Scouts plant 3000 trees
CONAKRY - June 15, 2011, 200 Scouts in partnership with DHL Guinea, were mobilized to plant 3000 in the Kakimbo Forest. Also represented at the function was the Ministry of Environment, some government officials, UNDP, diplomatic corps. The guest of honour was the President of the Republic, His Excellency Alpha Condé. Kakimbo Forest, which once covered more than 200 Acres of land, was classified in 1943 by the colonial administration, now covers only almost 40 Acres due to encroachment by surrounding populations.
For the National Scout Association of Guinea, this action has a double meaning in that it contributes to the preservation of national heritage, and also to the awareness of young people and that of the public so that they make decisions that contribute to environmental protection.
The President of the Republic, among other things in his speech said that any export of timber is prohibited, the construction of houses within the site was prohibited and that feasibility studies for construction on stilts in the mangroves be conducted.
It was indeed an act of salvation, as this site hosts the five boreholes that supply the capital Conakry with drinking water. The event was an opportunity for the Scout Association of Guinea to increase their more visibility and the confidence of partners.
