Scouts and UN remember victims of disasters in China and Myanmar

NAIROBI - On wednesday 28 May 2008, at the United Nations Headquarters in Africa, a remembrance service was held. The preparation of this event was done by the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), the Africa Scout Regional Office, the Embassy of China and the MCEDO-Beijing School.

Scouts ushered guests that included members of diplomatic missions in Kenya, UN staff and the press. In attendance was also the Representative of Asia and the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China. Scouts also mounted a parade of honour and led the VIPs to lay wreaths at the Garden of Remembrance. The Africa Regional Office was represented by some of its staff members.

Activities included, among others, a siren and minute of silence, lighting of the candle, a moving poem/song by the Beijing School in Mathare, short remarks by guests, Scouts' guard of honour and the laying of wreaths.

On 12 May 2008, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck the southwest Sichuan Province in China. More than 60,000 are reported to have lost their lives, while more than 20, 000 are missing.

In Myanmar on 2 May 2008, a category 3 Cyclone Nargis struck the country in the south of the City of Yangon. Official UN figures state that 77,738 people are dead and 55,917 are missing.

The Africa Scout Regional Office sent a message of solidarity to their Asia-Pacific counterparts.
