The Problem Solving Approach

Aim of the Game: To go through the problem-solving approach.

Learning Objectives:

• To discuss the problem statements.
• To use the problem-solving technique.

Structure:

Small groups discussion.

Time:

30-45 minutes.

Materials:

Visual Aid “Problem Solving Approach” and problem statements.

Method:

• Present and explain the following visual aid to the group:

The Problem-Solving Approach is a Scientific Approach

1. State the problem (What is the problem and why is it problematic?)
2. Hypothesise (List possible causes and effects - what are the causes and effects of this problem?)
3. Experiment (List down possible solutions to try)
4. Observe (List down the observations)
5. Conclusion (Write down your final solutions to the problem)

• Hand out the problems statements to each group for them to work on using the problem-solving approach.

The Problem Statements

1. Young people are dropping out of school.

2. Young people are pressured by a gang to join them.

3. There is a bully in the class.

4. A teenage girl is the subject of gossip in school.

5. A teenage boy is being ridiculed by his friends.

Evaluation:

• How was the experience of using the problem-solving approach?
• What factors influenced your hypothesis?
• What daily problems do young people in your country face and what can they do to solve them?
• Why do you think young people need to be able to solve the problems that they face?
