This included the disposal of the town's liquid wastes into the river and Cooke's Lake after the natural filtration process. This has proved very successful. Part of this budget was allocated to the Scouts to erect an environmental education centre on land in the Mafikeng Game Reserve, located approximately 1.5 km. outside the town on the Lichtenburg road.
A highly effective facility was opened in 1999. The Mafikeng SCENE now consists of twenty campsites, a covered assembly area, workshop rooms, a dining room, kitchen, large ablution block, bunkrooms, a store and accommodation for a manager, caretaker and twelve volunteers or teachers.

The Centre can be accessed from Botswana using the Nelson Mandela Highway going to Lichtenburg and entering at the Tourism Information Centre.

It can also be accessed from Lichtenburg road entering the Tourism Information Centre before going to the CBD.

The Centre in is in the Mafikeng Game Reserve Area and there are different trees and grass species around the area.

All buildings have been designed to complement the locality and innovative techniques have been used to maximise energy efficiency, some of which have not previously been seen in South Africa and which have proved very effective.

The Mafikeng Game Reserve, which is a breeding place for white Rhino, can be visited. Other Places of interest are the Heritage trail which runs across the Town and the Kgotla of Barolong Tribe. Other places Lotlamoreng Cultural Village and the Environmental Center

Active environmental education programme examples and samples:

The programme is run along the lines of the Scout Method, i.e. non-formal education system that is complementary to Outcomes Based Education. The following aspects are dealt with in the 3 days:

Why is the environment important? A sensory awareness game is played

Climate Change: Practical ways to prevent the increase in global warming, for example:

Energy saving at home by doing an energy audit, using alternative fuel sources, reducing the amount of electricity used and wearing warm clothes

Planting and caring for trees

Recycling and using waste material for trench bed food gardening

Re-use of water

Agricultural skills are taught by making trench bed food gardens. This is the first step in poverty alleviation.

HIV/Aids awareness: The Scout programme, “Scouting and Aids” is used as a guideline. The programme and workshop aims to encourage open discussion of sexual health matters, de-stigmatise AIDS, quash myths and encourage healthy behaviour.

Sanitation and how to make household water safe from diseases

A guided walk through the adjacent game reserve is seen as the highlight by the participants. Here they can observe rhinos, zebras, giraffe, buffalo, wildebeest and various antelope.

Investigating different invertebrate habitats. By using magnifying glasses and microscopes invertebrate life is examined.

Global resource issues are dealt with in the World Resources Game. The game is played in small teams and gives opportunities to develop teamwork and negotiation skills.

Self-development by taking part in the campfire and stargazing.
