Twenty-two boy and girl Scouts from the Qrendi Scout Group, whose ages varied from twelve to sixteen years, led by Scout Leader Louis Sammut, incorporated team work and acquired Scouting skills in order to fulfill their task and achieve their aims.

Meeting outside the grounds surrounding the historic and picturesque Guarena Palace, the local Scout group managed to fill four large skips with white goods and other rusty bulky refuse, within two hours.

Eighteen forty-five gallon drums, two cast iron bathtubs, one rabbit cage, six truck tyres, one chest freezer, two baby prams, nine water geysers, one refrigerator, one gas cooker and a rusty bicycle formed part of the day’s “catch”. A very large wooden cable reel and several wooden pallets were also collected.

Addressing the Scouts who participated in the activity, were Qrendi Local Councilors Mr. Daniel Farrugia and Mr. Emmanuel Muscat who thanked all those present for their high civic sense and duty, praising their efforts to leave the community in a much better state than they had found it.

“Scouts are the true defenders of the Maltese Environment and the Qrendi Community is grateful for all your sterling work,” continued Mr. Daniel Farrugia, who also thanked the Cleansing Services Department within the Ministry of Resources and Infrastructure, for providing their help as well as the skips and tools through out the day’s activity.

Trees for the town

Over 500 trees were planted in a new garden in the city of Qrendi, Malta.

The Qrendi Scout Group are also actively involved in a tree-planting project in conjunction with the local parish and its community. With a small garden having been created in the centre of the village, the Scouts, working with the local community and pastoral committees recently planted 500 Aleppo Pines (Sigar taz-Znuber) at this garden, courtesy of the numerous benefactors that hold the Qrendi community close to their hearts.

The Reverend Mario Mifsud, was later joined by his Vice Parish Priest, the Reverend Professor Emmanuel Agius, in the planting the Maltese National Tree and National flower, the Sandarac Gum Tree (Sigra ta’ Gharghar) and the Maltese Rock-centaury (Widnet il-Bahar) respectively.

The Tree planting activity was organised by the Qrendi Scout Group, whose Scout and Cub Scout members, Leaders and parents prepared the tree planting location, acquired the trees, and also helped in their planting and the watering of the seedlings, as part of the centenary of Scouting.
